The sector includes both health care and social assistance because it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the boundaries of these two activities. The industries in this sector are arranged on a continuum starting with those establishments providing medical care exclusively, continuing with those providing health care and social assistance, and finally finishing with those providing only social assistance. The services provided by establishments in this sector are delivered by trained professionals. JDRF is the world’s leading charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research and raise money to drive world class research. We aim to find new ways to treat type 1 diabetes and its complications, prevent type 1 from developing and find the cure for people who already have the condition. JDRF’s research mission is to discover, develop, and deliver advances that cure, better treat, and prevent T1D. As the global leader in the fight against T1D, JDRF’s research programs are comprehensive – addressing the hopes and dreams of every person with T1D for the best quality of life and a cure for this disease. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach, stops making insulin because the cells that make the insulin have been destroyed by the body’s immune system. Without insulin, the body’s cells cannot turn glucose (sugar), into energy. People with type 1 diabetes depend on insulin every day of their lives to replace the insulin the body cannot produce. They must test their blood glucose levels several times throughout the day. The onset of type 1 diabetes typically occurs in people under 30 years, but can occur at any age. About 10-15% of all cases of diabetes are type 1. Without insulin the body burns its own fats as a substitute which releases chemical substances in the blood. JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease ‘juvenile diabetes’ because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. In 2014 a JDRF Ride to Cure took place in Tahoe. Two hundred of people took part in the ride. More than $950,000 was raised. It’s a great social event where everyone who is thoughtful, cares about the future, should take part, ride, donate and get involved. The rout is an amazing mountain road with wonderful scenery. The riders do not just experience a nice ride, but also watch amazing parts of the country. Many people stand by the road and cheer the riders and try to support them. The rout goes through forest roads and mountain hills. It’s an important social ride during which every rider follows one single goal – to help JDRF research team to find the ultimate cure for T1D.
