The work to create transformational therapies to help people live with T1D cannot—and must not—be allowed to stop because dedicated researchers lack funds. Laboratory studies that are unlocking the mysteries of T1D and accelerating progress toward a cure and prevention must continue. With the generous help of supporters, JDRF is pursuing a diversified, dynamic research agenda that is moving us ever closer to a world without T1D. JDRF is committed to doing the greatest good for the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time so we understand the importance of funding these trials. Today more than 50 human trials, studying life-changing drugs, treatments and devices, are under way with our support. That’s 10 times the number less than a decade ago! Alfred F. JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. So a few years ago, we changed our name to JDRF: Juvenile Diabetes Reseach Foundation. Adelanto, California, in San Bernardino County, is 7 miles NW of Victorville, California (center to center) and 43 miles N of Riverside, California. Part of the surrounding Riverside – San Bernardino metro area, the city is not isolated. Adelanto is home to some 18,130 residents. n 1915, Adelanto was found by E. H. Richardson, the inventor of the Hotpoint Electric Iron. He bought the land for $75,000 and had intentions of developing a master planned community. He divided the land into one-acre plots and planned to build a respiratory hospital. In fact, it was his planning that laid the foundation for the present day City of Adelanto. In 1970, the city was incorporated and in November of 1992 it became a charter city. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone people need to get energy from food. T1D strikes both children and adults at any age and suddenly. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. Though T1D’s causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers play a role. There is currently nothing you can do to prevent it, and there is no cure. Type 1 diabetes strikes both children and adults at any age. It comes on suddenly, causes dependence on injected or pumped insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. Diabetes can affect how you feel each day. If your blood glucose level is too high or too low (hypoglycemia), you may not feel well.
