Broccoli extract: lowers blood sugar in diabetics.

In a study recently published in Science Translational Medicine, researchers randomly assigned 97 people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes to take a broccoli extract containing concentrated sulforaphane once daily for 12 weeks or a placebo with the same regimen. All but three of the participants were taking metformin, a standard treatment for blood sugar control. Glucose production was reduced among patients taking ultra-concentrated sulforaphane. The improved compound of fasting glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin, or HbA1c, an indicator of blood sugar levels in obese patients with deregulated type 2 diabetes. And sulforaphane also showed a protective effect against some complications associated with diabetes, such as neuropathy and renal failure.

How researchers light on the sulforaphane as a manager of blood sugar genetics and math. Led by Annika Axelsson of the University of Lund, Sweden’s Diabetes Center, scientists created a genetic profile of type 2 diabetes based on 50 key genes, alterations of which are associated with the disease. We then examined 3,852 different compounds to find other options that might reverse the genetic signature. Sulforaphane was highlighted. Before studying the compound in humans, Axelsson and colleagues first administered sulforaphane to animals. In rats with diabetes, the compound, which occurs naturally in cruciferous vegetables, had the desired effect, the inversion of the genetic signature in the livers of the animals. The chemical also controlled blood sugar to a level comparable to metformin.
