Lying just four miles from downtown Boston, the small but determined community of Brookline, Massachusetts, has maintained independence throughout its 300-year history. Once known as Muddy River, this little city incorporated in 1705 as Brookline. It became the first American town to reject annexation by a larger neighbor when it rebuffed Boston in 1873, sealing its own identity while setting a precedent for other affluent suburbs.
Perhaps the city’s greatest historical claim to fame, and one of Brookline’s top tourist spots, is the birthplace of President John F. Kennedy at 83 Beals Street. In 1967, four years after the assassination of the 35th U.S. President, his mother had the home restored to its 1917 appearance. Today, the John F. Kennedy National Historic Site offers tours of the house, the backyard and Brookline’s Coolidge Corner neighborhood from May through October. We do not know what causes this auto-immune reaction. Type 1 diabetes is not linked to modifiable lifestyle factors. There is no cure and it cannot be prevented.
Type 1 diabetes:
– Occurs when the pancreas does not produce insulin
– Represents around 10% of all cases of diabetes and is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions
– Onset is usually abrupt and the symptoms obvious
– Symptoms can include excessive thirst and urination, unexplained weight loss, weakness and fatigue and blurred vision
– Is managed with insulin injections several times a day or the use of an insulin pump.
