Diabetes is the name given to disorders in which the body has trouble regulating its blood glucose or blood sugar levels. There are two major types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which a person’s body still produces insulin but is unable to use it effectively.
JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, JDRF is the largest charitable supporter of T1D research.

JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. Aaron Gurley is talking about his JDRF mission and T1D experience. He is and active Boar Member of JDRF walk in Fenix. He is also Grace’s father, a T1D girl. Aaron thanks every JDRF participant, because it’s a big time commitment. The talk about the walk and fundraising is crucially important for JDRF and Aaron personally. Individual walks give a lot of advantage to JDRF research. Not just donation, but simple participation means a lot for JDRF and every T1D person. JDRF One Walk gives almost the majority of overall revenue. Each board of the walk plays crucial role in organization of the event. Aaron calls everyone to get involved in the event, even to start own walk team. The walk raises awareness and fundraises a lot. The Health Care and Social Assistance sector comprises establishments providing health care and social assistance for individuals. The sector includes both health care and social assistance because it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the boundaries of these two activities. The industries in this sector are arranged on a continuum starting with those establishments providing medical care exclusively, continuing with those providing health care and social assistance, and finally finishing with those providing only social assistance. The services provided by establishments in this sector are delivered by trained professionals. If you know your California history, you know that communities like Van Nuys were annexed to the City of Los Angeles after the Owens Valley Aqueduct was completed in 1913. In fact, that’s the story of political power in Los Angeles – whoever controls the water, controls the political power. Now, waitaminute, don’t get all confused with fictitious stories about water in Los Angeles. Yeah, there are great books, and movies, like “Chinatown”, but that’s fiction. Sorry, the real story isn’t filled with excitement and intrigue, it’s just about a place that was dry and dusty and in need of a steady supply of water at the turn of the century. Yep, just real estate. People with T1D would never benefit from JDRF-funded innovations without our donors. The work to create transformational therapies to help people live with T1D cannot—and must not—be allowed to stop because dedicated researchers lack funds. Laboratory studies that are unlocking the mysteries of T1D and accelerating progress toward a cure and prevention must continue. With the generous help of supporters like you, JDRF is pursuing a diversified, dynamic research agenda that is moving us ever closer to a world without T1D. If you live with T1D, you spend a lot of time thinking about your blood-sugar levels now and worrying about the complications that T1D may one day bring.
