George Hincapie, one of the most celebrated cyclists in history organizes his Gran Fondo ride to cure T1D and JDRF has his back. He talks with JDRF about why everyone should join the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes team. In 2014 it was his first JDRF Ride and since then he is an integral member of JDRF team. His Gran Fondo takes place every October 22 in Carolina and everyone can participate and help to cure T1D. Hincapie’s Ride isn’t a race, it’s a ride for cure. The scenery during the ride are awesome and worth seeing. The Skyuka mountain is the most wonderful part of the road and George’s favorite scenery. As the ride takes place in Autumn, the colors are amazing including nice rest-stops. During the Ride there are a lot of rest-stops where every rider can stop, have a rest and enjoy the view. George Hincapie gives an advice for every rider to train before the ride, even though it isn’t a race. List of all video credits is located here http://broadcaster.beazil.net/public/credits/youtube/videos/172285 JDRF’s research goal is to discover, develop, and deliver advances that progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we find a cure. JDRF is driving research across the entire scientific spectrum, from discovery in the laboratory to delivery of new technologies and treatments to people with T1D. The full impact of JDRF’s research investment extends well beyond our direct funding. Now more than ever, we see the value in leveraging partnerships with academia, industry and clinicians to ensure that the most promising research opportunities are funded and accelerated. JDRF often provides early-stage funding to research projects, and the results of those projects often lead to follow-on participation from many other entities – both other not-for-profit funders and corporations. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach, stops making insulin because the cells that make the insulin have been destroyed by the body’s immune system. Without insulin, the body’s cells cannot turn glucose (sugar), into energy. People with type 1 diabetes depend on insulin every day of their lives to replace the insulin the body cannot produce. They must test their blood glucose levels several times throughout the day. The onset of type 1 diabetes typically occurs in people under 30 years, but can occur at any age. About 10-15% of all cases of diabetes are type 1. Without insulin the body burns its own fats as a substitute which releases chemical substances in the blood. The residents of the town divide it into three large “sections” rather than smaller neighborhoods. These sections are: Foxon, Momauguin and “The Center”. Foxon area borders Branford and North Branford on the east, New Haven on the west to about Grannis Pond in the south, and surrounds State Route 80. This is the hilliest section of town. It counts among its landmarks the town high school, Foxon Park Beverage (a locally famous soda manufacturer), and Camp Murray, a Girl Scouts day camp. Grannis Pond used to host a YMCA camp until the land was sold and developed. The Momauguin area is located in the southern section of East Haven, from the Caroline Creek section of East Haven on the west to Branford on the east and starting at Short Beach Road in the north. The Health Care and Social Assistance sector comprises establishments providing health care and social assistance for individuals. The sector includes both health care and social assistance because it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the boundaries of these two activities. The industries in this sector are arranged on a continuum starting with those establishments providing medical care exclusively, continuing with those providing health care and social assistance, and finally finishing with those providing only social assistance. The services provided by establishments in this sector are delivered by trained professionals. JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D.
