Media Credits Column http://broadcaster.beazil.net/public/credits/youtube/videos/132174 JDRF is the only organization with a strategic research plan to end T1D. Our strategies include: Artificial Pancreas Systems Artificial pancreas systems will eliminate blood glucose testing and carb counting by totally automating insulin dosing, initially preventing dangerous low blood sugars and eventually ensuring ideal glucose control. Complications JDRF’s complications research is leading to therapies to treat and even reverse some of the debilitating, costly, and life-threatening complications caused by T1D. Encapsulation JDRF’s encapsulation research will restore insulin independence for 18 months to two years
by implanting newly created beta cells into a protective capsule, which eliminates the need for toxic immune suppression therapies. Type 1 Diabetes can occur at any age, but most commonly is diagnosed from infancy to the late 30s. Type 1 diabetes happens when your immune system destroys cells in your pancreas called beta cells. They’re the ones that make insulin. What Treatments are Used for Type 1 Diabetes?
The two goals of diabetes treatment are to make sure you feel well day-to-day and to prevent or delay long-term health problems. The best way to reach those goals is by:
– taking insulin
– planning your meals—choosing what, how much, and when to eat
– being physically active
You want a cure. So does JDRF. JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease ‘juvenile diabetes’ because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. St. Joseph (informally St. Joe) is a city in and the county seat of Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. It is the principal city of the St. Joseph Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Buchanan, Andrew, and DeKalb counties in Missouri and Doniphan County, Kansas. As of the 2010 census, St. Joseph had a total population of 76,780, making it the eighth largest city in the state, third largest in Northwest Missouri. The metropolitan area had a population of 127,329 in 2010. St. Joseph is located on the Missouri River. It is perhaps best known as the starting point of the Pony Express and the death place of Jesse James; the rapper Eminem was born here as well. St. Sean Busby, a professional snowboarder is a T1D person. Since he was diagnosed, Sean does everything he can to help others, especially children living with diabetes. Sean encourages everyone to help JDRF special program. This program provides big sums for critically important federal research that’s improving the lives of people with diabetes. Through the special diabetes program scientists have made major strides in diabetes research. It’s funding life-changing therapies like artificial pancreas systems, which will help people like Sean himself to better manage his blood sugar level until the cure is found. Sean says that Congress will not consider renewing this crucial research program.
