It is a state-established “Urban Enterprise Zone”, implemented through a program designed to assist businesses in communities across New Jersey. Businesses within the zone are eligible for a variety of incentives, including a sales tax reduction to 3½% to customers at eligible merchants (from the mandated 7% statewide sales tax), with no tax on clothing or on purchases made by merchants related to running their businesses. Revenue generated from the reduced sales tax is maintained in a special fund dedicated for use within the zone for specific economic development and physical improvement projects. The zone was established in 1996 based on legislation passed in February 1995 through the efforts of Senator Sacco, one of the sponsors of legislation creating the zones. JDRF is leading the way in establishing measurement guidelines and holding itself accountable to supporters. JDRF has developed transparent organizational goals, as well as a set of research and advocacy objectives and outcomes for the current year by which organizational success will be measured. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach, stops making insulin because the cells that make the insulin have been destroyed by the body’s immune system. Without insulin, the body’s cells cannot turn glucose (sugar), into energy. People with type 1 diabetes depend on insulin every day of their lives to replace the insulin the body cannot produce. They must test their blood glucose levels several times throughout the day. The onset of type 1 diabetes typically occurs in people under 30 years, but can occur at any age. About 10-15% of all cases of diabetes are type 1. Without insulin the body burns its own fats as a substitute which releases chemical substances in the blood. You’re the reason for our success. Every dollar we put toward research comes from donations. So when you support JDRF with your time, talent, voice and, yes, your money, you enable us to advance even more research. There are many ways to join the JDRF family, but for 45 years there has been only one reason—because we are the organization that will turn Type One into Type None. Take Action – Don’t be indifferent! There are many different types of insulin delivery devices available including syringes, pens, jet injectors, oral insulin and pumps which are detailed below. Furthermore, insulin that can be inhaled and other new approached to insulin treatment are at different stages of availability and development throughout the world. Direct subcutaneous insulin injection remains the most common form of delivery, using a needle and syringe. Although external insulin pumps remain hard to access and expensive, many people with diabetes find them to be accurate, precise and flexible as insulin delivery systems providing tight blood glucose control. At this stage, implantable insulin pumps are still in development.
