Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition in which the immune system is activated to destroy the cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. We do not know what causes this auto-immune reaction. Type 1 diabetes is not linked to modifiable lifestyle factors. There is no cure and it cannot be prevented.
Type 1 diabetes:
– Occurs when the pancreas does not produce insulin
– Represents around 10% of all cases of diabetes and is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions
– Onset is usually abrupt and the symptoms obvious
– Symptoms can include excessive thirst and urination, unexplained weight loss, weakness and fatigue and blurred vision
– Is managed with insulin injections several times a day or the use of an insulin pump.
LaGrange is named after the country estate near Paris of the wife of the Marquis de La Fayette, who visited Georgia in 1825 and remarked on the similar topography of that regio of Georgia and his estate. The settlement of LaGrange began in the early 19th century, soon after the territory was ceded by the Creek Indians and the subsequent establishment of Troup County. The city was incorporated in December 1828. During the American Civil War, LaGrange was defended by a volunteer women’s auxiliary group known as the Nancy Harts or Nancy Hart Rifles, after Nancy Hart. T1D can be living in anyone, it comes in all shapes and sizes, different colors, forms. When you have diabetes, you pancreas doesn’t produce insulin. It’s not caused by your diet, it’s not caused by anything you did. T1D can be very serious, the biggest fear all T1D people have is the diabetes complications, which are not always predictable. Parents of T1D children always are in charge of their kids’ life. Diabetes never gives you a second off, it’s always on your mind. It’s really hard to have diabetes, but the families and friends push them every day to be strong. That is what keeps most of T1D people keep along. Founded by parents determined to find a cure for their children with T1D, JDRF expanded through grassroots fundraising and advocacy efforts to become a powerhouse in the scientific community with more than 100 U.S. locations and six international affiliates. We’ve funded nearly $2 billion in research to date and made significant progress in understanding and fighting the disease. We must keep up the pace of funding so progress doesn’t slow or stop entirely.
