Do your Symptoms Add Up to Diabetes

It’s often the case, your body is trying to tell you something, but people just aren’t listening to its queues.

“If they’re not going to their doctor, if they’re not seeing their physician they’re not having those lab works, they’re not reporting their signs they could just be going along with their normal daily activities,” says Melanie Aracri.

When you have diabetes, your blood sugar levels are consistently high because the body can’t self-control insulin to process glucose. High blood sugar carries a host of symptoms. Melanie Aracri is a diabetes educator with Lee Health Solutions.

“The three classic signs of high blood sugar, we call them the three p’s: polyphagia, polydipsia, and polyuria. Those are increased thirst, increased hunger, and increased urination,” says Aracri.

Other warning signs are unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision and slow healing sores. As these begin to add up, it is not uncommon for people to seek help in an emergency capacity.

“It’s not those symptoms of the high blood sugar- they’re coming in with the chest pain or the nausea, the vomiting. And then they find out the diabetes,” says Aracri.

The best defense in avoiding a crisis is a good offense. Regular screening for diabetes gives you the information you need to sidestep the condition or serious complications.
