The JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes at the Gran Fondo Hincapie is one of the premier Gran Fondos in the country. Don’t just take our word for it – watch professional cyclist George Hincapie tell you why you should join JDRF as we partner with the Gran Fondo Hincapie. At the Gran Fondo Hincapie, you’ll join more than 2,000 cyclists including JDRF riders, recreational riders, members of the professional peloton and other stars of the cycling world for a challenging ride through the mountains and valleys of upstate South Carolina. You can see the changing leaves as George and his fellow professionals lead you along the same roads he used to train for the Tour de France and Paris-Roubaix. Cyclists can choose from three routes – Gran (80 miles), Medio (50 miles) and Piccolo (15 miles) – along the scenic Blue Ridge foothills. These routes vary in intensity, but regardless of your skill level, one of these routes is the perfect one for you. Lewiston’s location at the confluence of the Snake River and Clearwater River made it a natural distribution point due to its seaport. The Port of Lewiston is Idaho’s only seaport and is navigable for barges which transport grain, legumes, paper, lumber and other goods up and down the Columbia River. Paper product manufacturer, Clearwater Paper is the largest employer in the manufacturing sector. Ammunition manufacturing maintains an important and growing presence in Lewiston. Ammunition maker CCI, and Speer Bullet (both now brands of Alliant Techsystems) are headquartered in Lewiston and Extreme Bullet has a plant in the city as well. JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. So a few years ago, we changed our name to JDRF: Juvenile Diabetes Reseach Foundation. JDRF is leading the way in establishing measurement guidelines and holding itself accountable to supporters. JDRF has developed transparent organizational goals, as well as a set of research and advocacy objectives and outcomes for the current year by which organizational success will be measured. JDRF works towards a day when there is no more type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Diabetes – is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. This is also called hyperglycemia. When you eat your body breaks food down into glucose and sends it into the blood. Insulin then helps move the glucose from the blood into your cells. When glucose enters your cells, it is either used as fuel for energy right away or stored for later use. In a person with diabetes, there is a problem with insulin.
