JDRF is focused on bringing life-changing therapies from the lab to the community by impacting every stage of the drug delivery pipeline. Working the pipeline to expedite and sustain meaningful scientific progress, made possible by our donors, is the key to delivering progressively advanced therapies. This means:
– Driving research across the entire scientific and development spectrum, from discovery in the laboratory to delivery in patients
– Collaborating with public, private, academic and corporate partners to expedite delivery of real-world solutions
– Advocating for progress that will improve lives today and lead to a cure tomorrow JDRF is uniquely positioned to create a future without T1D. Carol Lurie, the founder of JDRF tells her T1D story. The Lurie’s family played a vital part in JDRF. They constantly inspired, guided and supported its work on every level, especially an international one. Carol became involved in JDRF when her son was diagnosed diabetic at the age of 10 years old. He was urinating in his bed at night and people were making fun of him. The doctor diagnosed T1D. Carol heard about a woman called Lee Ducat who started an organization for the Juvenile Diabetes foundation at that time. Lee had the heart and the maxim never to take no for an answer. Carol told about the memory about their conversations they used to have at night at the kitchens. Each cooking dinner for their families was for what to do next. They hit Washington. They began to see congressmen and senators. East Detroit Public Schools is a school district headquartered in Eastpointe, Michigan, United States in Metro Detroit. The district serves Eastpointe and a portion of Warren. In a four-year period until 2012 the district lost 1,400 students. In 2012 it had $4.2 million fewer dollars in operating revenue than it did in 2011. In 2012 the district had 3,500 students. During that year the district opened up a school of choice program for grades K-8 so that anyone from Macomb County may apply to attend East Detroit schools. On November 8, 2013, David Zauner, a teacher at East Detroit High School, dove into a pool to rescue a 14-year-old student who was drowning. The boy died in the hospital four days later. JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone people need to get energy from food. T1D strikes both children and adults at any age and suddenly. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. Though T1D’s causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers play a role. There is currently nothing you can do to prevent it, and there is no cure. Type 1 diabetes strikes both children and adults at any age. It comes on suddenly, causes dependence on injected or pumped insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications.
