JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. So a few years ago, we changed our name to JDRF: Juvenile Diabetes Reseach Foundation. Reston contains four artificial lakes: Lake Anne, Lake Audubon, Lake Newport, and Lake Thoreau. Another artificial lake, Lake Fairfax, is only partially on Reston property, but is technically Fairfax County parkland. We are JDRF – Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We won’t stop until we create a world without T1D (type one diabetes). We are committed to eradicating type 1 diabetes and its effects for everyone with type 1, and at risk of developing it. T1D treatment options are improving all the time. We are driving research to improve the technology people with T1D use to monitor blood sugar levels and research that will ultimately deliver a cure. Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person’s blood sugar (glucose) level to become too high. The hormone insulin – is responsible for controlling the amount of glucose in the blood. Insulin therapy is an important part of diabetes treatment. All people who have t1D and some people who have T1D need to take insulin to stabilize their blood sugar level. People diagnosed with T1D usually start with 2 injections of insulin per day of 2 different types of insulin and generally progress to 3 or 4 injections per day of insulin of different types. Most people with T2D may need 1 injection per day with or without any diabetes pills. If diabetes pills stop working, people with T2D will start with 2 injections per day of 2 different types of insulin. Living with diabetes can be very demanding and some patients lose motivation over time. JDRF is the leading global organization funding T1D research with more than 100 U.S. locations and 6 international affiliates. Since inception, JDRF has contributed over $1.9B to T1D research and including $98M in 2014. JDRF is currently funding 45 human clinical trials of potential T1D therapies. Approximately 80% of JDRF expenditures directly support T1D research and research-related education. JDRF’s mission is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research. JDRF International is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. The Health Care and Social Assistance sector comprises establishments providing health care and social assistance for individuals. The sector includes both health care and social assistance because it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the boundaries of these two activities. The industries in this sector are arranged on a continuum starting with those establishments providing medical care exclusively, continuing with those providing health care and social assistance, and finally finishing with those providing only social assistance. The services provided by establishments in this sector are delivered by trained professionals.
