JDRF made a wonderful short-film about kids vision of T1D. Nasir, a small boy with diabetes, explains in his own words what T1D actually is. In our body lives a small Pancreas, which produces Beta-cells, which make insulin. But when we have diabetes, a T1D monster, a freaky creature, steals Beta-cells and eats them and that’s why our body doesn’t obtain insulin. Nasir would like to invent a special machine, which would produce extra Beta-cells and a Super-Man will come with these new Beta-cells to our body and kill the monster. Nasir believes that a great number of Beta-cells will be needed, but only then we can be healthy. With the help of JDRF research team maybe one day such a machine will appear and our planet will be free from T1D. Without insulin, the body’s cells cannot turn glucose (sugar), into energy.
People with type 1 diabetes depend on insulin every day of their lives to replace the insulin the body cannot produce. They must test their blood glucose levels several times throughout the day.
The onset of type 1 diabetes typically occurs in people under 30 years, but can occur at any age. About 10-15% of all cases of diabetes are type 1.
Without insulin the body burns its own fats as a substitute which releases chemical substances in the blood. Without ongoing injections of insulin, the dangerous chemical substances will accumulate and can be life threatening if it is not treated. This is a condition call ketoacidosis. Health Care and Social Assistance comprises establishments primarily engaged in providing health care by diagnosis and treatment, providing residential care for medical and social reasons, and providing social assistance, such as counselling, welfare, child protection, community housing and food services, vocational rehabilitation and child care, to those requiring such assistance.Excluded from this sector are aerobic classes in Amusement, Gambling, and Recreation Industries and nonmedical diet and weight reducing centers in Personal and Laundry Services. Although these can be viewed as health services, these services are not typically delivered by health practitioners. La Vergne is located close to the center of Tennessee. JDRF’s research goal is to discover, develop, and deliver advances that progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we find a cure. JDRF is driving research across the entire scientific spectrum, from discovery in the laboratory to delivery of new technologies and treatments to people with T1D. The full impact of JDRF’s research investment extends well beyond our direct funding. Now more than ever, we see the value in leveraging partnerships with academia, industry and clinicians to ensure that the most promising research opportunities are funded and accelerated. JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D.
