ViaCyte, a leader in the emerging field of regenerative medicine proposes a new approach in curing T1D. It aims to perform self-cells for diabetes. The source for new cells that they will deliver comes from embryonic themselves. ViaCyte uses a series of chemicals to change these cells and ultimately the cells transform into cells-type pancreas. Such pancreas cells will be delivered to the patient inside a special capsule. Stem cells are the latest strategy that scientists are pursuing for T1D cell replacement therapy. The strategy involves generating beta cells from pluripotent stem cells, either embryonic or iPS cells, that function similarly to beta cells found in a healthy human pancreas. CIRM is funding a type 1 diabetes clinical trialsponsored by the San Diego based company ViaCyte. They are currently testing acombination drug delivery system that implants a medical device capsule containing pancreatic progenitor cells derived from human embryonic stem cells. Montgomery Village is a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States, and a northern suburb of Washington, D.C.. It is a large, planned suburban community, developed in the late 1960s and 1970s just outside Gaithersburg city limits. Montgomery Village’s population was 32,032 at the time of the 2010 U.S. Census, and it is a part of the Washingtonian metropolitan area. As of the 2000 U.S. Census,[14] there were 38,051 people, 14,142 households, and 9,729 families residing in the area. The population density was 5,875.1 people per square mile (2,267.2/km²). There were 14,548 housing units at an average density of 2,246.2 per square mile (866.8/km²). JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. Alfred F. You’re the reason for our success. Every dollar we put toward research comes from donations. So when you support JDRF with your time, talent, voice and, yes, your money, you enable us to advance even more research. There are many ways to join the JDRF family, but for 45 years there has been only one reason—because we are the organization that will turn Type One into Type None. Take Action – Don’t be indifferent! In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach, stops making insulin because the cells that make the insulin have been destroyed by the body’s immune system. Without insulin, the body’s cells cannot turn glucose (sugar), into energy. People with type 1 diabetes depend on insulin every day of their lives to replace the insulin the body cannot produce. They must test their blood glucose levels several times throughout the day. The onset of type 1 diabetes typically occurs in people under 30 years, but can occur at any age. About 10-15% of all cases of diabetes are type 1. Without insulin the body burns its own fats as a substitute which releases chemical substances in the blood.
