FHIS Science Bytes - Dr. Alex Johnstone
Alex is a Senior Research Fellow and Registered UK Nutritionist based at the University of Aberdeen, Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health. She leads internationally competitive research in the area of human appetite control in the context of weight loss and obesity with an interest in the effect of diet on metabolic health or type 2 diabetes. She obtained her PhD from the University of Aberdeen in 2001 and has published over 50 dietary, clinical & exercise based studies with human volunteers. More recent work has been on regulation of appetite with high-protein diets and improvement of insulin sensitivity by altering diet composition. She is a consultant for Marks and Spencer, recently advising on the development and launch of their new weight loss range of high protein meals, ‘Fuller Longer’. Her role at the Institute, being funded by the Scottish Executive, requires interactions with policy makers and advisors & MSP’s. The nature of her work also facilitates frequent interactions with the media, press and food industry within the arena of nutrition, diet and health. She is a reviewer for national and International scientific journals. She is a partner in 3 EU grants.
