JDRF works towards a day when there is no more type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Diabetes – is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. This is also called hyperglycemia. When you eat your body breaks food down into glucose and sends it into the blood. Insulin then helps move the glucose from the blood into your cells. When glucose enters your cells, it is either used as fuel for energy right away or stored for later use. In a person with diabetes, there is a problem with insulin. But, not everyone with diabetes has the same problem. There are different types of diabetes – type 1, type 2, and a condition called gestational diabetes, which happens during pregnancy. If you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin, it can’t use the insulin it does make very well, or both. Burlington is a perfect example of a ride to cure diabetes. Many people participate in the ride in order to turn type one into type none. People are extremely happy about the event. The preparations are extremely important for each rider. All the participants start at the line and do their own ride – it’s not a race, but a RIDE to cure diabetes. During the ride many people cheer and support the riders. After the ride there is always a special after party, where all the people celebrate their achievements. People are extremely happy and sure that the ultimate cure will be found. The team is amazing and the coaches support the riders. JDRF never leave their participants alone. You’re the reason for our success. Every dollar we put toward research comes from donations. So when you support JDRF with your time, talent, voice and, yes, your money, you enable us to advance even more research. There are many ways to join the JDRF family, but for 45 years there has been only one reason—because we are the organization that will turn Type One into Type None. Take Action – Don’t be indifferent! Before the civil war, the area of Valrico consisted of several cotton plantations known as Long Pond. It was renamed to Valrico, meaning “rich valley” in Spanish, in the 1880s when a philosophy professor from Tufts college, William G. Tousey, purchased property in the area. In 1890, an influx of new immigrants arrived following the construction of the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroads through the area. When the railroad was completed, Tousey began building up the community with retail stores, streets, and a bank. In 1895, a major freeze halted these developments, and the population began to dwindle. Nonetheless, Valrico continued to press on, with a schoolhouse being completed in 1896.
