JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. To accomplish this, JDRF has invested nearly $2 billion in research funding since our inception. We are an organization built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities, collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, and uniting on a national stage to pool resources, passion and energy.

At present, Oyster Bay includes around 18 incorporated villages and more than 16 unincorporated hamlets. According to one tradition, Hicksville was named after Valentine Hicks, a landowner and the son-in-law of renowned Quaker preacher Elias Hicks. However, some also believe that it was named in honor of Elias Hicks. The Long Island Railroad line first entered the hamlet in 1837. Excluded from this sector are aerobic classes in Subsector 713, Amusement, Gambling, and Recreation Industries and nonmedical diet and weight reducing centers in Subsector 812, Personal and Laundry Services. Although these can be viewed as health services, these services are not typically delivered by health practitioners. JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) kills the body’s beta cells that produce insulin which gives us the energy we need for everyday life. JDRF’s vision, the Beta Cell Restoration Program, will not only stop the autoimmune attack but also return the number of beta cells to a normal level. JDRF is developing vaccines that will re-train the immune system to eliminate autoimmunity and leave the beta cells alone. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) can occur in anyone—not just kids. If you or an adult you know has recently been diagnosed with T1D, check out the JDRF T1D Care Kit, a free resource containing information and tools to educate, support and inspire newly diagnosed adults. In 2014 a JDRF Ride to Cure took place in Tahoe. Two hundred of people took part in the ride. More than $950,000 was raised. It’s a great social event where everyone who is thoughtful, cares about the future, should take part, ride, donate and get involved. The rout is an amazing mountain road with wonderful scenery. The riders do not just experience a nice ride, but also watch amazing parts of the country. Many people stand by the road and cheer the riders and try to support them. The rout goes through forest roads and mountain hills. It’s an important social ride during which every rider follows one single goal – to help JDRF research team to find the ultimate cure for T1D.
