Bariatric surgery is now widely used, the BMJ says. Commonest is for a silastic band to encircle the upper stomach forming a small pouch, soon giving a feeling of fullness, food gradually trickling through a small hole. This can be adjusted from the outside.
It’s a highly successful treatment. Other methods involve surgically diverting the bowel. Although expensive and with risks, it seems the best alternative today in severe cases.
