JDRF works towards a day when there is no more type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Diabetes – is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. This is also called hyperglycemia. When you eat your body breaks food down into glucose and sends it into the blood. Insulin then helps move the glucose from the blood into your cells. When glucose enters your cells, it is either used as fuel for energy right away or stored for later use. In a person with diabetes, there is a problem with insulin. But, not everyone with diabetes has the same problem. There are different types of diabetes – type 1, type 2, and a condition called gestational diabetes, which happens during pregnancy. If you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin, it can’t use the insulin it does make very well, or both. Of these, an estimated 160,000 have diabetes but don’t know it, greatly increasing their health risk. 1,719,000 people in Indiana, 35.6% of the adult population, have prediabetes. Almost 36,000 people in Indiana are diagnosed with diabetes every year. The total population of Granger is 29,400, which is 3.95% more than it was in 2000. The population growth rate is lower than the state average rate of 7.60% and is much lower than the national average rate of 11.61%. The Granger population density is 1,149.86 people per square mile, which is much higher than the state average density of 179.64 people per square mile and is much higher than the national average density of 82.73 people per square mile. The most prevalent race in Granger is white, which represent 89.93% of the total population. The average Granger education level is higher than the state average and is higher than the national average.
