Multiply the millions of people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) by the hours of sleep lost, finger pricks, insulin injections and pump site changes necessary to manage this disease, and it is clear — T1D takes up too much space in our lives. This November help JDRF raise awareness and educate others on life with T1D.

You don’t want anyone else you love to ever know the physical, emotional and financial toll this disease takes. You want a cure. So does JDRF. And we are committed to funding the development of new therapies and treatments to keep people with T1D healthier, longer, until that cure is found. That’s why we invest in multiple therapeutic approaches to cure, prevent and treat T1D. We identify and invest in promising therapies in their early stages, helping researchers pursue innovative ideas and approaches. This investment strategy ensures that the most life-changing breakthroughs can make it through the long research, development and delivery process and get to people living with T1D sooner. Diabetes is the epidemic of the 21st century and the biggest challenge with which is confronting the health system of the United States. Annually 5,089 youth are newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and 18,436 with type 1 diabetes. Growing prevalence of diabetes in Texas was estimated at 2,841,723 people. An estimated 663,000 of Texas’s population have diabetes but don’t know it. Annually Texas spends about $23.7 billion for diabetes. According to 2012 diabetes statistics total medical costs in patients with diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes, prediabetes and gestational diabetes in Texas were estimated at $18.2 billion.
