Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone people need to get energy from food. T1D strikes both children and adults at any age and suddenly. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. Though T1D’s causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers play a role. There is currently nothing you can do to prevent it, and there is no cure.
Type 1 diabetes strikes both children and adults at any age. It comes on suddenly, causes dependence on injected or pumped insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications.
Diabetes can affect how you feel each day. If your blood glucose level is too high or too low (hypoglycemia), you may not feel well. Keeping your blood glucose in a target range will help you feel your best. People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin several times a day to keep their blood glucose under control. You also need to check blood glucose regularly and use the information to adjust the amount of insulin you are taking. Talk with your health care team about how and when to check your blood glucose. You’re the reason for our success. Every dollar we put toward research comes from donations. So when you support JDRF with your time, talent, voice and, yes, your money, you enable us to advance even more research. There are many ways to join the JDRF family, but for 45 years there has been only one reason—because we are the organization that will turn Type One into Type None. Take Action – Don’t be indifferent! Diabetes is the epidemic of the 21st century and the biggest challenge with which is confronting the health system of the United States. If present trends continue by 2050 as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes. Almost 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. Only 11.1% of Americans with prediabetes have been told they have it. 397,000 people in Idaho have prediabetes. Annually 5,089 youth are newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and 18,436 with type 1 diabetes. Growing prevalence of diabetes in Idaho was estimated at 134,680 people. 97,938 people in Idaho are diagnosed with diabetes annually. An estimated 36,000 of Idaho’s population have diabetes but don’t know it. While staying in Meridian tourists can visit the Roaring Springs Water Park, which includes Thunder Falls, Kiddie Slide, and an icy landslide. The water park also offers the White Water Bay Wave Pool, Endless River, and the Leisure Lagoon. You can also let your kids enjoy at the Adventure Island Playground. The Boondocks Fun Center is also worth taking a look around. The city also offers easy access to Boise City Zoo, World Center Birds of Prey, Warhawk Air Museum, and Eagle Island State Park.
Boise State University, Eastern Oregon University, Walla Walla Community College, and several other colleges and universities offer higher educational facilities. JDRF is the only organization with a strategic research plan to end T1D. Our strategies include: Artificial Pancreas Systems Artificial pancreas systems will eliminate blood glucose testing and carb counting by totally automating insulin dosing, initially preventing dangerous low blood sugars and eventually ensuring ideal glucose control. Complications JDRF’s complications research is leading to therapies to treat and even reverse some of the debilitating, costly, and life-threatening complications caused by T1D.
