So when you support JDRF with your time, talent, voice and, yes, your money, you enable us to advance even more research. There are many ways to join the JDRF family, but for 45 years there has been only one reason—because we are the organization that will turn Type One into Type None. Take Action – Don’t be indifferent! JDRF was founded in the New York area. Led by Lee Ducat, a group of local parents of children with T1D mobilized to raise money for diabetes research, and formed the first chapter of what was then known as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. A second chapter was founded shortly thereafter in Miami, Florida, followed by chapters in northern New Jersey and Washington, D.C. The fledgling organization was defined by its commitment to research funding. In addition to the high priority on funding T1D research, the organization’s founders resolved to inform the public about all aspects of T1D, advocate for more research funding from the federal government, and maintain the organization’s system of management by volunteer lay people. Type 1 diabetes in children used to be known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes. Alternative Names of T1D: Insulin-dependent diabetes; Juvenile onset diabetes; Diabetes – type 1. Type 1 Diabetes – In type 1 diabetes, your immune system mistakenly destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. Your body treats these cells as invaders and destroys them. This can happen over a few weeks, months, or years. When enough beta cells are destroyed, your pancreas stops making insulin, or makes too little insulin. Because the pancreas does not make insulin, insulin needs to be replaced. Insulin does not come in a pill. People with type 1 diabetes take insulin by injection with a syringe, an insulin pen, or an insulin pump. Post Falls has everything to make your visit or vacation one to remember. Waterfront activities on the Spokane River, fine dining, premium lodging, golf and shopping from Cabela’s to specialty shops. North Idaho is also an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise with hunting and fishing at our doorsteps. Post Falls is on your way…located on I-90 only 8 miles west of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and 20 miles east of Spokane, Washington. JDRF Walk is a social event organized for everyone. The most important this ride is for people with diabetes. They find strength and optimism to move forward and to try new experiences. Jessica, a T1D young woman, shares her emotions and experience during the ride. For Jessica, being a cyclist doesn’t mean riding a hundred miles or to ride fast. You just need to set your mind to it, get on your bike and ride and celebrate every your accomplishment. Jessica’s JDRF Ride story isn’t unique. There are thousands of people around America with the same story. JDRF Ride made it possible for every T1D person to be a true cyclist.
