JDRF works towards a day when there is no more type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Diabetes – is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. This is also called hyperglycemia. When you eat your body breaks food down into glucose and sends it into the blood. Insulin then helps move the glucose from the blood into your cells. When glucose enters your cells, it is either used as fuel for energy right away or stored for later use. In a person with diabetes, there is a problem with insulin. But, not everyone with diabetes has the same problem. There are different types of diabetes – type 1, type 2, and a condition called gestational diabetes, which happens during pregnancy. If you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin, it can’t use the insulin it does make very well, or both. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. So a few years ago, we changed our name to JDRF: Juvenile Diabetes Reseach Foundation. Redford is the site of Cloud City Studios, where the band Walls of Jericho recorded their debut album, From Hell. As of the census of 2000, there were 51,622 people, 20,182 households, and 13,582 families residing in the township. The population density was 4,597.4 per square mile (1,774.8/km²). There were 20,605 housing units at an average density of 1,835.1 per square mile (708.4/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 87.98% White, 8.54% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.02% of the population. As of the census of 2010, there were 48,362 people, 19,148 households, and 12,387 families residing in the township. The population density was 4,597.4 per square mile (1,774.8/km²). There were 20,739 housing units at an average density of 1,835.1 per square mile (708.4/km²). The Health Care and Social Assistance industry includes establishments and services such as: hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities and out-patient care centres; offices of health practitioners (i.e. dentists, doctors, optometrists and chiropractors); medical and diagnostic laboratories; home health care services; ambulance services; social assistance services (i.e. for children, youth, the elderly, families); community food, housing, emergency and relief services; vocational rehabilitation services; and daycare services. Multiply the millions of people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) by the hours of sleep lost, finger pricks, insulin injections and pump site changes necessary to manage this disease, and it is clear — T1D takes up too much space in our lives. This November help JDRF raise awareness and educate others on life with T1D.
