Keeping a Community Healthy

Public health is personal to Sally Jackson.

“I work with our community on the Healthy Lee Initiative,” says Sally Jackson, who is Lee Memorial Health System’s director of community relations.
An on-going, county-wide program, Healthy Lee essentially takes the pulse of our collective well-being.
“Every three years we do a survey of the community to find out how the health status has changed. We look at those trends, we compare them to the state of Florida, the nation as a whole, and healthy people 20/20 goals,” says Jackson.
An ultimate goal is to find ways to intervene and better people’s health and quality of life. The ‘It’s all About You’ program reaches out to the individual with chronic medical conditions and counsels them on healthy habits.

“It could be heart disease, it could be cancer, it could be diabetes arthritis, depression – anything that you’re living with, a health problem on a day to day basis,” says Sharon Krispinsky, who is the chronic health program coordinator.
Based on successful national models, the 6-week course focuses on all-around skills instead of a managing a single condition.

“We’ll talk to you about the importance of sleep, the importance of working more effectively with your health care provider, the importance of avoidance of alcohol,” says Krispinsky.
A proper diet and fitness are two major cornerstones. Something It’s all About You and Healthy Lee are actively trying to convey.
“The more people we can engage to choose, commit, and change their own personal lifestyles, the better the whole community’s health profile will be,” says Jackson.

Taking stock in the community pays off with happy, healthy residents.
