As Jamaica Plain became a part of Boston, the rate of growth continued to increase. The triple decker house, a defining image in urban New England architecture, first showed up in the 1870s, and spread rapidly in the 1890s. In Jamaica Plain, the first commercial blocks were built in the 1870s, with the first brick commercial building erected in 1875. In 1873, the imposing brick police station was built on Seavern’s Avenue, and a year later the recently built Eliot School was renamed West Roxbury High School, only to be changed to Jamaica Plain High School after annexation. The Stony Brook valley had long been the industrial center of Jamaica Plain. In 1871, the Haffenreffer brewery opened near Boylston and Amory Streets, taking advantage of the Stony Brook aquifer and the presence of German immigrants in the area. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Diabetes – is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. This is also called hyperglycemia. When you eat your body breaks food down into glucose and sends it into the blood. Insulin then helps move the glucose from the blood into your cells. When glucose enters your cells, it is either used as fuel for energy right away or stored for later use. In a person with diabetes, there is a problem with insulin. But, not everyone with diabetes has the same problem. There are different types of diabetes – type 1, type 2, and a condition called gestational diabetes, which happens during pregnancy. In 2013 an important social event was held at Washington – JDRF Children’s Congress. This congress last for three days and each day was equally important. The first day all the delegates made acquaintance with each other and told their life stories about having diabetes. Even grown-ups shared their experiences and proved that normal life exists with T1D. Then all the delegates gathered in a chorus with Chrystal and sang a song “Promise to remember me”. This song became a symbol of JDRF Children’s Congress. The third day was an official one. T1D kids met with the congressmen and senators. Children were the best advocacy for JDRF. Also there was an official meeting – Senate Committee – dedicated to the discussion of crucial questions. Artificial Pancreas was the main goal of the congress. After the congress JDRF received hundreds of positive comments regarding the event. We have some of the best ratings for an organization focused on a single disease from charity watchdog groups and media. In 2012, Forbes named JDRF one of its five “All-Star” charities, based on its evaluation of our financial efficiency.
