Miss America Contestants Include First Open Lesbian & A Diabetic
The Miss America Pageant returns Sunday with a few contestants who are leading the charge in breaking the traditional stereotypes of pageant girls. Missouri’s Erin O’Flaherty is the first openly lesbian contestant in the history of the national pageant, and she plans compete on the platform of preventing suicide, which disproportionately affects LGBTQ youth. 18-year-old Miss New Hampshire Caroline Carter, walked the runway at the preliminary swimsuit competition wearing a glucose monitor for her type-1 diabetes. Sunday’s pageant will be broadcast live on ABC from Atlantic City, N.J.
