IN THE PAST FEW YEARS, PRESERVATIVE FREE FOODS HAS BECOME AN IDEA FOR AMERICAN LIVING. MANY FOOD AND DRINK DISTRIBUTORS HAVE BEGUN TO ALTER THEIR PRODUCTS BY REMOVING THESE PRESERVATIVES TO APPEASE CONSUMERS. SO WHAT EXACTLY IS A PRESERVATIVE? BY DEFINITION, A FOOD PRESERVATIVE IS A NATURAL OR SYNTHETICALLY PRODUCED SUBSTANCE THAT IS ADDED TO FOOD AND BEVERAGES TO PREVENT SPOILAGE. COMMON PRESERVATIVES INCLUDE SORBIC ACID, BENZOIC ACID, SODIUM NITRATE, AND MANY MORE PUZZLING NAMES THAT CAN BE FOUND IN AN INGREDIENTS LIST ON SAY, THE SIDE OF A CEREAL BOX. SOME MAJOR COMPANIES ARE HESITANT TO TAKE OUT PRESERVATIVES DUE TO THE DRASTIC CHANGE IN FLAVOR OF THEIR PRODUCTS. BUT IN 2008, COCA-COLA REMOVED THE CONTROVERSIAL SODIUM BENZOATE PRESERVATIVE FROM THEIR DIET COKE.
SODIUM BENZOATE IS USED TO PROVIDE SAFETY AND STABILITY IN FOOD AND BEVERAGES BUT CONSUMERS HAVE BEGUN TO DEMAND ITS REMOVAL FROM PRODUCTS AFTER RESEARCH FROM SHEFFIELD UNIVERSITY LINKED THE ARTIFICIAL ADDITIVE TO CELL DAMAGE.

THE CURRENT CONTROVERSY IS THE ADDITIVE IN BEEF PRODUCTS CALLED “PINK SLIME” SUCH AS IN THIS HAMBURGER MEAT. THIS PRESERVATIVE IS CAUSING CONSUMERS TO QUESTION THEIR EATING HABITS AND TURN TO MORE NATURAL PRODUCTS.

ONE LOCAL BEER COMPANY IS KNOWN FOR ITS PRESERVATIVE-FREE BEER. STRAUB WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1872 AND PRIDES ITSELF ON BEING THE “NATURAL CHOICE” FOR BEER DRINKERS. MEG SHAW, CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIAN STRAUB REPRESENTATIVE SAYS THAT DOCTORS RECOMMEND STRAUB OVER OTHER BEERS FOR PATIENTS WITH DIABETES.

WHILE THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION HAS APPROVED MORE THAN THREE THOUSAND FOOD ADDITIVES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION, THE CONTROVERSY CONTINUES AS TO WHETHER SOME OF THESE POSE AS POTENTIAL HEALTH RISKS.
