Preventing Kidney Disease

Millions of people are living with kidney disease. Once diagnosed, doctors say it can’t be cured but there are ways to prevent it.

Dr. Gautham Mogilishetty, a renal transplant surgeon with Lee Health, says kidney disease is known as a silent disease that occurs in five stages. “Kidney disease is a manifestation of an organ dysfunction. You don’t know that you have kidney failure until you start to manifest some of the more symptomatic features.”

The symptoms are brought on by toxins developing in the body and can include anemia, fatigue, low energy, lack of sleep, and an overall ill feeling. “Kidney disease is more common than you think it is. It’s preventable and prevention is better than a cure,” said Dr. Mogilishetty.

While the most common cause for kidney disease is diabetes, doctors say there are things patients can do to prevent the disease. “The main thing is taking care of yourself. Eating healthy, controlling your blood pressure, blood sugar control if you have diabetes, and in general using medication and seeing your doctor regularly,” said Dr. Mogilishetty.

If patients have been diagnosed with kidney failure, they first need to find the cause to prevent it from getting to stage five. “Stage five is the ultimate end stage of kidney disease where the patient needs hemodialysis or transplantation. Only about 800,000 people ever reach the final stage, end stage renal disease requiring some type of therapy either dialysis or transplant,” said Dr. Mogilishetty.

Studies show nearly 26 million people suffer from kidney disease between stages one and four. “See your doctors early and follow the recommendations and be on top of your diabetes and blood pressure that is the key for your success,” said Dr. Mogilishetty.

Signs of kidney disease can be spotted early through blood tests, making it important for patients to get their yearly physicals and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
