JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. Prior to Euro-American settlement, the area where Oregon City is located was a focal point for fishing and trade among the Native Americans and home to the Clowwewalla (also known as the Charcowah) and the Cashhooks Indians (of the Upper Chinookan Linguistic group) and the Molalla Indians (of the Waiilatpuan Linguistic family). The nearby Clackamas Indians, also of the Upper Chinookan Linguistic group, located their villages along the Clackamas River. Smallpox, cholera and other Euro-American diseases introduced by early explorers decimated the tribes. By the time Euro-American settlement in the area began, only about 650 Clowwewalla and Cashhooks remained. Their numbers steadily declined into the mid-19th century. If you inject insulin three or more times a day then it’s a good idea to rotate your injection sites. Injecting in the same place much of the time can cause hard lumps or extra fat deposits to develop. These lumps are not only unsightly; they can also change the way insulin is absorbed, making it more difficult to keep your blood glucose on target. Follow these two rules for proper site rotation: Same general location at the same time each day. Rotate within each injection site. Insulin is absorbed at different speeds depending on where you inject, so it’s best to consistently use the same part of the body for each of your daily injections. For example, do not inject your lunch bolus dose in the abdomen on Monday and in the thigh on Tuesday. JDRF is the only organization with a strategic research plan to end T1D. Our strategies include: Artificial Pancreas Systems Artificial pancreas systems will eliminate blood glucose testing and carb counting by totally automating insulin dosing, initially preventing dangerous low blood sugars and eventually ensuring ideal glucose control. Complications JDRF’s complications research is leading to therapies to treat and even reverse some of the debilitating, costly, and life-threatening complications caused by T1D. Encapsulation JDRF’s encapsulation research will restore insulin independence for 18 months to two years
by implanting newly created beta cells into a protective capsule, which eliminates the need for toxic immune suppression therapies. Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition in which the immune system is activated to destroy the cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. We do not know what causes this auto-immune reaction. Type 1 diabetes is not linked to modifiable lifestyle factors. There is no cure and it cannot be prevented.
