JDRF Children’s Congress took place at Washington in 2011. Children from all the USA came to Washington to participate in the congress. There were even some international delegates. It was a three-day event during which T1D kids shared their life experiences of being diabetics, sang together in a chorus, talked to senators and congressmen and participated in an official committee. During this congress some special questions were discussed – such as the development of Artificial Pancreas and better treatment for T1D people. Children were the main participants of the congress and the best advocacy. It was important for them to see people with the same problems and to understand, that they are not alone. This congress brought great hope to the hearts of all T1D kids. Alternative Names of T1D: Insulin-dependent diabetes; Juvenile onset diabetes; Diabetes – type 1. Type 1 Diabetes – In type 1 diabetes, your immune system mistakenly destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. Your body treats these cells as invaders and destroys them. This can happen over a few weeks, months, or years. When enough beta cells are destroyed, your pancreas stops making insulin, or makes too little insulin. Because the pancreas does not make insulin, insulin needs to be replaced. Insulin does not come in a pill.
