Sleep Apnea a New Disease, With Dr. Michel Fancelli, Montreal (Longueuil), Quebec, Canada
We hear more and more about sleep apnea the last few years. Seems like everybody has it or you know someone who uses a c-pap. Sleep apnea and other sleep breathing disorders are not new, it is because there has been a great deal of research on apnea and sleep breathing disorders in the last 10 to 15 years. We now know more about these problems and doctors and dentists are more aware of these disorders and how to treat them says Dr. Michel Fancelli of the Fancelli Snoring and Apnea Clinic of Montreal (Longueuil).
One of the reasons we hear about sleep apnea is that it is in the news a lot more. As an example when NFL football star Reggy White died of a sleep apnea related problem in 2004 there was great media attention. In Quebec a spouse is suing a c-pap manufacturer for the death of her husband due to a faulty apparatus.
According to Dr. Michel Fancelli of the Fancelli Snoring and Apnea Clinic of Montreal (Longueuil) another reason we hear more about sleep apnea is that testing is much easier. Before, to get tested for apnea you had to go to a sleep lab, be all wired up in a strange room with monitors. Today you can be screened for sleep apnea with a sleep test monitor that you take home. These sleep apnea tests are much easier and less expensive.
With these take home sleep monitors we are screening more people for sleep apnea and the more people you test the more people you will diagnose.
We know that approximately 25% of the population suffers from a type of sleep disorder. As we get older the risk of sleep apnea increases, however sleep apnea can be found in anyone including young children.
Dr. Michel Fancelli of the Fancelli Snoring and Apnea Clinic of Montreal (Longueuil) insists on the importance to get screened for sleep apnea if you snore, since 90% of apnic patients snore and because apnea can lead to many health problems such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems, type 2 diabetes, headaches, bruxism and TMJ pain, gastric reflux, weight gain and sexual dysfunction in men.
Dr. Fancelli is a member of the ACSDD (Clinical Sleep Disorder Disciplines) and practices at Centre Dentaire Fancelli (www.centredentairefancelli.ca) Montreal (Longueuil) Quebec, Canada since 1984. Dr Fancelli is a sleep expert for Sleep Better TV which provides on demand sleep disorder video content.
