Health Care and Social Assistance comprises establishments primarily engaged in providing health care by diagnosis and treatment, providing residential care for medical and social reasons, and providing social assistance, such as counselling, welfare, child protection, community housing and food services, vocational rehabilitation and child care, to those requiring such assistance.Excluded from this sector are aerobic classes in Amusement, Gambling, and Recreation Industries and nonmedical diet and weight reducing centers in Personal and Laundry Services. Although these can be viewed as health services, these services are not typically delivered by health practitioners. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. So a few years ago, we changed our name to JDRF: Juvenile Diabetes Reseach Foundation. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. The body breaks down the sugars and starches you eat into a simple sugar called glucose, which it uses for energy. Insulin is a hormone that the body needs to get glucose from the bloodstream into the cells of the body. With the help of insulin therapy and other treatments, even young children can learn to manage their condition and live long, healthy lives.
Type 1 diabetes signs and symptoms can come on quickly and may include:
Bed wetting in children who previously didn’t wet the bed during the night;
Extreme hunger;Unintended weight loss;
Irritability and other mood changes;
Fatigue and weakness;
In females, a vaginal yeast infection. If you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin, it can’t use the insulin it does make very well, or both. Type 1 diabetes is when one’s immune system mistakenly destroys the cells in ones pancreas that produce insulin. Your body treats these cells as invaders and destroys them. When beta cells are destroyed, your pancreas stops making insulin, or makes too little of it. As no insulin is produces, your glucose level increases and is too high, which is called hyperglycemia. This means insulin needs to be replaced. Previously, T1D was called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes. T1D affects about 5% of people in the USA with diabetes. T2D is where the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or your body doesn’t use insulin properly. We have some of the best ratings for an organization focused on a single disease from charity watchdog groups and media. In 2012, Forbes named JDRF one of its five “All-Star” charities, based on its evaluation of our financial efficiency.
