Jaakko Tuomilehto, MD, MA, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Public Health of the University of Helsinki, Finland, and currently working as the Professor of Vascular Prevention at the Danube-University Krems in Krems, Austria and is associatedwith the Diabetes Prevention Unit of the Finnish National Institute for Heath and Welfare. He obtained his medical degree at the University of Turku, Finland in 1973. His research interests includethe epidemiology and prevention of noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and dementia. He has contributed to many landmark studies, including Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study (DPS) that was the ﬁ rst in 2001 to demonstrate a remarkable almost 60%reduction in the incidence of diabeteswith lifestyle intervention. These ﬁndings have afterwards been replicated by several other trials, proving the concept. Heis the Principal Investigator of the WHODIAMOND Project mapping the incidenceof childhood type 1 diabetes worldwide.He has also established large internationalcollaborative studies of diabetes epidemiology, the DECODE/DECODA (DiabetesEpidemiology-Collaborative analysis of Diagnostic Criteria in Europe/Asia) studiesthat have formed the basis on the glucosecriteria for the diagnosis of diabetes. Hehas been invited to be a member of several ADA and WHO committees on the deﬁnition and diagnostic criteria of diabetes. He is actively involved in several othercommittees, scientiﬁ c organisations and advisory boards nationally and internationally. Currently he serves as the Editorin-Chief of Primary Care Diabetes.He has received many prestigious scientiﬁ cawards and contributed to over 1100 scientiﬁ c peer-reviewed publications, and isone of the most cited authors in the ﬁeld of clinical medicine and diabetes with theh-index 117.
