The Harmful Side Effects Of Avandia
Avandia, a popular diabetes medication, was linked to 304 deaths during the third quarter of 2009, ranking first among all prescribed drugs in the number of serious, disabling and fatal side effects reported to the FDA. Hundreds of thousands of people still take Avandia, even though the American Diabetes Association recommended in 2008 that doctors use other drugs instead of Avandia in light of potential heart problems and other side effects caused by Avandia.
The FDA added a warning about potential heart attacks to Avandia in 2007, but the scope of the risk continues to be the focus of debate. A recent report released by the Senate Finance Committee in February 2010 found that GlaxoSmithKline, Avandia’s manufacturer, knew of possible heart attack risks years before such evidence became public. Instead of sufficiently warning patients and the FDA of these side effects in a timely manner, GlaxoSmithKline tried to downplay findings that Avandia could increase the risk of heart attacks.
The senate committee report was critical of the FDA’s support of Avandia, asking the FDA why it allowed clinical trials of Avandia to continue even after the agency estimated that Avandia caused 83,000 heart attacks between 1999 and 2007. Included within the senate committee report were studies about Avandia’s side effects by two FDA doctors who said in 2008 the drug should be pulled from the market.
Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed in state and federal courts claiming that Avandia’s manufacturer failed to sufficiently warn patients of Avandia’s harmful side effects. U.S. District Judge Cynthia M. Rufe, the judge overseeing the federal Avandia lawsuits, ordered that the parties establish and maintain a website that will post information from the Avandia litigation.
If you or a loved one has taken Avandia and has suffered harmful side effects such as a heart attack or congestive heart failure you should contact an attorney familiar with the serious Avandia side effects linked to its use.
