Riachard K Bernstein is a pioneer of diabetes self-care. He was 12 years old in 1948 when he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. He went on to be an engineer. But in 1967, the first glucometers became available. He got one and became fascinated with managing his blood sugar levels. He wrote articles on it for medical journals. He had to go to medical school to get them published. He went on to become a pioneer of diabetes self-care. In his late 70s, he had the remarkable values of hdl 118, ldl of 53, and triglycerides of 45. This was the real, the original low carb diet – Scarsdale diet.
