Over 31 million Americans suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD) and millions more are at risk. As approximately 38% of the U.S. population suffers from either diabetes or high blood pressure – the two leading causes of CKD – this is a health problem that affects many Americans’ daily lives. Our kidneys filter over 200 liters of blood a day and CKD decreases their ability to perform this function and many others that keep us healthy. Early detection is important when it comes to CKD as it can help prevent the progression of CKD.
Javier Rodriguez, president and CEO of DaVita Kidney Care, joined us to discuss CKD- from what it is to its symptoms and who is most at risk.
“Chronic kidney disease unfortunately affects 1 in 10 Americans. It means that your
kidneys are not functioning at 100%. For those not aware, your kidneys cleanse your blood of toxins and excess fluid. So if your kidneys are not functioning at 100%, you have chronic kidney disease. If your kidneys fail, you go for dialysis. Dialysis circulates your blood through an artificial kidney in a machine for about four hours. This is a life sustaining therapy, so you want to make sure you get a world class center. CMS, which is Medicare, just came out with a ranking system that is very similar to Yelp or hotels or restaurants that have a ranking system of 1-5. DaVita Kidney Care got ranked the best in the country. There are some medications that can slow down the progression, and more importantly watching your diet is a really important thing.”
