India is home to 65 million diabetics and it is estimated that this number will rise to 109 million by 2035. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is blindness caused due to diabetes. As the number of patients with diabetes grow so does the threat of blindness due to diabetes.
The Public Health Foundation of India in association with The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust are working together in supporting the Indian government to ensure that diabetic retinopathy is fully integrated into policies and guidelines. Strengthening health workforce, provision of appropriate equipment and inclusion of diabetic retinopathy in existing health management systems are the key goals of the programme.
