"Type 2 diabetes: exercise is still the best medicine" by Prof Mark Febbraio
Prof Mark Febbario, Head of the Diabetes and Metabolism Division at the Garvan Institute, gives a presentation about his Type 2 diabetes research and the importance of exercise.
There are 382 million people with Type 2 diabetes worldwide. Prof Febbraio begins by explaining his frustrations at researching a disease (Type 2 diabetes) that is almost preventable in 80% of cases.
How does exercise help and why should we care? Myokines! Myokines are small proteins that are produced by muscle cells in response to muscular contractions. Once released, myokines travel through the circulatory system to other organs, altering the biology of those organs. Ultimately, this activity plays a role in protecting the body against metabolic diseases like diabetes.
