What are the type 2 diabetes fruits that diabetic patients should take? Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases characterized by a lack of insulin production or an abnormal usage of insulin by the body. Diabetic patients often aim to balance their blood sugar levels that is why they have diets and regular exercise.

The Benefits of Fruits
If you have type 2 diabetes, fruits are very beneficial because they are sweet yet they do not worsen the problem. The fiber in fruits helps in lowering the body’s response to glucose and in avoiding further risks that are brought about by diabetes such as stroke and heart disease. Just because fruits are sweets, it does not mean that they should not be a part of a balanced diabetic diet.

Fruits to Eat
This list contains a few fruits that are commonly recommended for diabetic patients because of their low glycemic content. This list does not mean that you should exclude all other fruits from your diet. Rather, this list tells you the preferable fruits that you should take if you want to treat diabetes.

  1. Berries. Berries (such as strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries) contain a lot of antioxidants and fiber. Antioxidants help in maintaining the balance of the body. Berries are also good for digestion because of the fiber.
  2. Grapefruits. Highly beneficial, grapefruits are actually citrus fruits that help in lowering blood glucose levels and contains vitamin C as well as fiber.
  3. Apples. The healthy thing about apples is that they contain pectin, which are natural detoxifiers for the body because pectin helps remove waste from the bloodstream. Moreover, pectin can aid in lowering a diabetic patient’s need for insulin.

Fruits to Avoid
There are actually no particular fruits that should be avoided as long as they are taken in moderation. However, bananas and mangoes are relatively higher in glycemic content, so they should be taken with caution compared to other fruits. You may still eat these fruits but you have to be careful with their effect on the blood sugar levels.

Spreading your type 2 diabetes food intake throughout the day can surely help you in stabilizing your blood sugar levels.
