Type 2 Diabetes - Will Aerobic Training on Land or Water Improve a Diabetic's Quality of Life?

Scientists at the Universidade Federal Rio Grande Sul and various other institutions in Brazil set out to discover whether aerobic training on land or in the water was better for people who had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. The good news is both helpful in helping lower blood sugar readings.

  • 17 participants to the dry land aerobic training group, and
  • 18 to perform the aerobic physical activity in water.

The investigators compared the two groups before they commanded training and again after twelve weeks. The quality of sleep and life were improved in the participants in both groups. From these results, it was concluded both methods were equally effective.

Walking, swimming and bicycle riding are often recommended for Type 2 diabetics. There are numerous other types of aerobic activity, so it need not get boring. Water aerobics and land aerobics classes are given in many community centers and colleges. They usually consist of various movements from a standing position in a swimming pool. Walking along the bottom of the pool is a simple activity with as much potential to lower body fat as walking on land, as long as the intensity is the same.

In 2006 the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness reported on a study from the University of Utah in the United States. A total of thirty-eight women were assigned to walk either on land or in a pool for 13 weeks. Both groups lost an equal amount of weight and body fat. Some of the women preferred to jog in water. Fun games are ideal for aerobic activity as well. Play volleyball or basketball on land or in a swimming pool. Dance on the "dance floor" or learn underwater ballet or synchronized swimming. There are even several brands of motion and stationary bikes that can be hidden in a pool or the ocean. Try filling a clear 2-liter bottle with pool water and closing it with a white cap. The bottle will seem to disappear as you and your friends hunt for it.
