It’s a dramatically serious and dangerous disease. The pancreas is a glandular organ in the digestive system and endocrine system of vertebrates. In humans, it is located in the abdominal cavity behind the stomach. Our pancreas produces insulin. The hormone insulin is what lets our cells turn glucose from the food we eat into energy. Insulin helps move the glucose from blood into our cells. Those with diabetes have problem with insulin. There are two main types of diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2. T1D is when one’s immune system mistakenly destroys the cells in ones pancreas that produce insulin. T2D is where the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or your body doesn’t use insulin properly. JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. So a few years ago, we changed our name to JDRF: Juvenile Diabetes Reseach Foundation. Type 1 Diabetes can occur at any age, but most commonly is diagnosed from infancy to the late 30s. Type 1 diabetes happens when your immune system destroys cells in your pancreas called beta cells. They’re the ones that make insulin. What Treatments are Used for Type 1 Diabetes?
The two goals of diabetes treatment are to make sure you feel well day-to-day and to prevent or delay long-term health problems. The best way to reach those goals is by:
– taking insulin
– planning your meals—choosing what, how much, and when to eat
– being physically active
You want a cure. So does JDRF. And we are committed to funding the development of new therapies and treatments to keep people with T1D healthier, longer, until that cure is found. Clermont County was established in 1800 and was the eighth County established in the Northwest Territory. The first village in Clermont County was Williamsburg, which was established in 1796. A large number of the early settlers came from Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Virginia. The original county seat was in Williamsburg (originally spelled Williamsburgh), where it remained until 1823. It then moved to New Richmond along the Ohio River for one year before moving to Batavia, where it remains today. JDRF is the only organization with a strategic research plan to end T1D. Our strategies include: Artificial Pancreas Systems Artificial pancreas systems will eliminate blood glucose testing and carb counting by totally automating insulin dosing, initially preventing dangerous low blood sugars and eventually ensuring ideal glucose control. Complications JDRF’s complications research is leading to therapies to treat and even reverse some of the debilitating, costly, and life-threatening complications caused by T1D.
