They also know that Type 1 Diabetes can result when something in the environment, like a virus, tells your immune system to go after your pancreas. Most of people with T1D have signs of this attack, called autoantibodies. They are presented in almost everyone who has the condition when their blood sugar is high. Type 1 diabetes can happen along with other autoimmune diseases, like Grave’s disease or vitiligo. The symptoms are often subtle, but can become severe. San Antonio lies on the San Antonio River, which was originally used for transport but is now primarily a focus for waterside activities and a backdrop to urban living. The city is probably best known for being the site of the Battle of the Alamo during the war for Texas independence in 1836. San Antonio still has a strong Latino presence, with more than 63 percent of residents identifying as Hispanic or Latino in 2010. Along with the Alamo, the Riverwalk is one of the prime tourist destinations in San Antonio. Also known as Paseo del Rio, this pedestrian street, located a story beneath downtown San Antonio along the river banks, features restaurants, bars and shops. Other attractions in the city include the McNay Art Museum, HemisFair Park, Seaworld San Antonio and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. JDRF is the world’s leading charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research and raise money to drive world class research. We aim to find new ways to treat type 1 diabetes and its complications, prevent type 1 from developing and find the cure for people who already have the condition. JDRF’s research mission is to discover, develop, and deliver advances that cure, better treat, and prevent T1D. As the global leader in the fight against T1D, JDRF’s research programs are comprehensive – addressing the hopes and dreams of every person with T1D for the best quality of life and a cure for this disease. Millions of people around the world live with type 1 diabetes (T1D), a life-threatening autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults. There is no way to prevent it, and at present, no cure. JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day.
