JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. So a few years ago, we changed our name to JDRF: Juvenile Diabetes Reseach Foundation. In 2012, Forbes named JDRF one of its five “All-Star” charities, based on its evaluation of our financial efficiency.

People with T1D must regularly monitor their blood-sugar level, inject or continually infuse insulin through a pump, and carefully balance their insulin doses with eating and daily activities throughout the day and night. T1D is a serious and stressful disease to manage. Treatment options are improving all the time, and people with T1D are able to lead normal, productive and inspiring lives. JDRF is driving research to improve the technology people with T1D use to monitor blood-sugar levels and deliver the proper doses of insulin, as well as research that will ultimately deliver a cure. The closing bell was an important event for all T1D people and especially for JDRF. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. In 2011, at Washington, the November 22nd, BMO Financial Group received the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) National Sponsors Award for overall corporate and company-wide support of The Walk to Cure Diabetes.
