JDRF prioritizes its funding for type 1 diabetes research in four interrelated therapeutic areas: autoimmune therapies, β-cell therapies, prevention of complications, and glucose control. Each therapeutic area encompasses a diverse portfolio of research programs that span from exploratory to preclinical proof-of-principle and on to clinical proof-of-concept research. The organization’s overarching strategy focuses on addressing critical gaps and challenges, catalyzing innovative and transformational research, advancing and translating research, creating collaborations, and accelerating time lines at all stages of research development. To facilitate downstream partnering and follow-on funding, JDRF increasingly supports product development by “de-risking” projects, thereby decreasing the barriers of entry for future funders. contributor Alfred Gerriets Juvenile diabetes contributor https://issuu.com/southcomm/docs/lnfoc_april16/60 Kentucky and Southern Indiana Chapter List of Video Credits can be found here http://broadcaster.beazil.net/public/credits/youtube/videos/149225 Type 1 diabetes in children used to be known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes. If your doctor thinks you have T1D, he will check your blood sugar levels. Many people with T1D lives healthy lives. The key to good health is to keep your blood sugar levels within the range doctor gives you. How is Type 1 Diabetes Different from Type 2 Diabetes? In type 2 diabetes, your body does not use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance. At first, the beta-cells make extra insulin to make up for it. But, over time your pancreas isn’t able to keep up and can’t make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose levels normal. Type 2 diabetes can be treated with oral medications, and/or insulin. Type 1 diabetes is always treated with insulin. Health Care & Social Assistance sector comprises firms providing health care and social assistance for individuals. The sector includes both health care and social assistance because it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the boundaries of these two activities. The industries in this sector are arranged on a continuum starting with providing medical care exclusively, continuing with those providing health care and social assistance and finally finishing with only social assistance. The services provided in this sector are delivered by trained health practitioners and social workers with requisite experience. The city of Atwater is steeped in tradition which is reflected in the memorial buildings, city halls, and libraries. Visitors keen on learning about the history of this place can pay a visit to the Castle Air Museum or the Bloss House Museum. There are quite a few churches around the city that have retained their old world charm. One can visit the amusement parks like the Heller Park, the Andy Albiani Park, the E L Walters Park or the Atwater Memorial Ballpark, all of which offer excellent entertainment opportunities for adults and kids alike. JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. In 2013 JDRF Children’s congress took place in Washington. It was a great social event for every T1D child and during the congress kids shared their life experiences being diagnosed with each other. It was an important act of communication after which many kids understood that they are not alone in their problem. Also, Crystal wrote a song for the congress called “Promise to remember me”. All the participants of the congress sang the song in the chorus. A great number of volunteers joined the congress and helped the participants. T1D kids took photos with T1D grownups who managed diabetes and live a full life with all its advantages and disadvantages.
